Keratin Treatments 101: Everything You Need to Know Before You Book
As a certified national educator for both Marcia Keratin and Global Keratin, I’ve taught keratin treatments to stylists across the country. But my favorite conversations are with clients who want to understand what they’re investing in before they sit in my chair.
What Is a Keratin Treatment?
A keratin treatment is a professional hair smoothing service that uses keratin — a protein naturally found in hair — combined with other conditioning agents to reduce frizz, add shine, and improve manageability. The results can last 3-6 months depending on your hair type and maintenance.
Will It Make My Hair Straight?
This depends on the formula. Some keratin treatments provide complete straightening; others simply smooth and reduce frizz while keeping your natural texture. During your consultation, I’ll assess your hair and recommend the right treatment for your goals.
How Long Does It Take?
A full keratin treatment typically takes 2-4 hours depending on hair length, density, and condition. Plan for a full session, not a lunch break appointment.
What’s the Aftercare?
The first 24-72 hours after your treatment are critical. You’ll need to avoid washing your hair, wearing it in ponytails, or using any clips that could create bends. After the initial period, using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner will extend your results significantly.
Is It Safe?
Professional keratin treatments from reputable brands like Marcia Keratin and Global Keratin are formulated for salon use and are safe when applied by a trained professional in a well-ventilated space. I only use brands I’ve been certified in and personally trust.
