Keratin Treatments 101: What to Expect, How Long It Lasts, and Is It Worth It?

By Janelle Alexis | Hair Education

As a certified educator for both Marcia Keratin Treatments and Global Keratin, this is a topic I know inside and out. Keratin treatments are one of the most misunderstood services in the salon industry — people either think they’re a miracle cure or a chemical nightmare. The truth, as usual, is somewhere more nuanced. Let me give you the real breakdown.

What Is a Keratin Treatment?

A keratin treatment is a smoothing service that infuses keratin protein into the hair cuticle and uses heat to seal it in. The result is smoother, shinier, more manageable hair with significantly reduced frizz. Depending on the formula and your hair type, you can expect the results to last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

It’s important to note that keratin treatments are not straightening treatments. They reduce frizz and enhance your natural pattern — they won’t turn wavy hair pin-straight (though they will tame and relax it considerably). If you want completely straight hair, that’s a different chemical process entirely.

What to Expect During the Service

A full keratin treatment takes approximately 2–4 hours depending on your hair length and density. We start by shampooing your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup. The keratin formula is then applied section by section from root to tip. After processing time, the hair is blow-dried and then flat-ironed at high heat in small sections — this is what seals the keratin into the cuticle.

There will be some smell during the service, particularly during the flat-iron step. The level of smell depends on the formula — some professional formulas (like Global Keratin) are specifically formulated to be lower in formaldehyde or formaldehyde-free. I always ensure the salon is well-ventilated during treatments.

The First 72 Hours: What You Can and Cannot Do

This is where most people get tripped up. After a keratin treatment, you typically need to keep your hair completely dry and avoid tying it up or putting it behind your ears for 72 hours. No washing, no sweat, no humidity exposure. This is the hardest part for active clients, but it’s non-negotiable — the keratin needs those 72 hours to fully cure and bond to the hair fiber.

Is It Worth It?

For the right client? Absolutely. If you spend significant time every morning fighting frizz, if humidity is ruining your blowout within hours of leaving the salon, or if you have chemically-treated hair that needs protein reinforcement — a keratin treatment is a genuine quality-of-life improvement. I’ve had clients tell me it gave them an extra hour every morning.

If you’re in Houston (where humidity is basically a weather system unto itself), a keratin treatment is practically a public health service. Book a consultation to see if it’s right for your hair: schedule your visit here.
