Extensions After 40: Everything You Need to Know About Hair as You Age

By Janelle Alexis | Hair Education

Hair changes as we age — and that is not a bad thing, but it does require us to adapt our approach. I see more clients in their 40s and 50s than ever before who want to feel confident and beautiful in their hair, and many of them have questions specific to aging hair. Let me answer the most common ones here.

How Does Hair Change After 40?

After 40, most women experience some combination of the following: finer hair texture overall, reduced density (especially at the crown and part line), slower growth rate, drier scalp, and for some, the beginning of hormonal hair changes related to perimenopause or menopause. These changes are normal, but they do affect what kinds of extensions are appropriate and how we install them.

Can You Still Get Extensions After 40?

Absolutely. Women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond get extensions every day in my salon and love the results. The key is choosing the right method for your current hair density and being honest about any thinning at the crown or temples. Extension methods that disperse weight evenly — like tape-ins — tend to be gentler on finer, aging hair than methods that concentrate tension at specific points.

What About Extensions and Gray Hair?

Blending extensions with gray or silver hair requires careful color matching and often custom blending of multiple extension shades. It is absolutely achievable, but it requires an experienced stylist who knows how to work with multi-tonal natural hair. I have done beautiful blended extension work on clients with significant gray and silver throughout their natural hair.

Caring for Aging Hair With Extensions

Be even more diligent about your aftercare routine if your hair is fine or thinning. Use lightweight, extension-safe products. Be gentle when detangling. Give your hair periodic breaks from extensions if you have been wearing them continuously — I usually recommend a 4-6 week rest period every 12-18 months for clients with finer hair.

For a personal assessment and recommendation for your specific hair, book a consultation. I am happy to give you an honest evaluation.
