How to Build a Beauty Brand That Lasts: Lessons from 10 Years in the Industry
By Janelle Alexis | Beauty Entrepreneur, Author & Certified Educator
Ten years in the beauty industry teaches you things no classroom could. My BS in Business Administration gave me the framework. Running a salon, building a brand, writing a book, and growing @houstonhairbabe to millions of followers gave me the education. Here are the most important lessons I’ve learned about building a beauty brand that actually lasts.
Your Brand Is Your Reputation, Not Your Logo
I see so many new stylists obsessing over their logo and their Instagram aesthetic while neglecting the thing that actually builds a brand: the experience they deliver in the chair. Your logo is a visual representation of your reputation, not the source of it. Build your reputation first. The brand identity will follow naturally.
Niching Down Is Not Limiting — It’s Liberating
I am the hair extension specialist. Not the everything-for-everyone stylist. The moment I committed to my niche, my brand crystallized and my ideal clients found me effortlessly. Trying to be everything to everyone makes you memorable to no one. Pick your specialty, own it completely, and let your expertise speak for itself.
The Client Experience Is Your Marketing
Before Instagram existed, stylists built full books through referrals. The mechanism hasn’t changed — only the medium. When a client has an exceptional experience in your chair, she doesn’t just come back. She talks about you, she tags you, she sends her friends. Your best marketing dollars are the ones you spend making every appointment extraordinary.
Education Never Stops
I’ve never stopped learning. My BS gave me business fluency. My cosmetology license gave me technical foundation. My Babe certification gave me advanced extension mastery. Classes, seminars, mentor relationships — I’ve invested in every form of education I could access. In an industry that evolves constantly, the stylist who stops learning starts declining.
Document Everything From the Beginning
Start taking photos of your work from day one. Not just the glamour shots — the before-and-afters, the behind-the-scenes, the process. Your work portfolio is your most powerful sales tool, and those early photos become the proof of your journey when you write your story later. Trust me on this one.
Build Your Email List Like Your Life Depends on It
Social media platforms are borrowed land. Your email list is your asset. Every client should be on your list. Every follower you can convert should be on your list. When Instagram changes its algorithm (and it will), your email list is the direct line to your community that no platform can take away. Start building it today — visit my VIP newsletter to see how I’ve built mine.
The Brand That Lasts Tells a True Story
My memoir, Rose Colored Glasses, wasn’t just a personal healing exercise — it became a brand-defining document. The women who read it understand not just what I do, but who I am and why I do it. Authenticity at that level builds a loyalty no ad budget can purchase. Tell your real story. It is your unfair advantage.
