Keratin Treatment vs Relaxer: Which Chemical Service Is Right for You?
Keratin Treatment vs Relaxer: Which Chemical Service Is Right for You?
By Janelle Alexis | Licensed Cosmetologist & Certified Hair Educator
Two of the most misunderstood services in the salon. Clients often come in asking for one when they actually need the other — and the difference matters enormously for the health of your hair. Let me break it down clearly.
What Is a Keratin Treatment?
A keratin treatment (also called a keratin smoothing treatment or Brazilian blowout) is a temporary smoothing service that deposits keratin protein into the hair cuticle. The result is dramatically reduced frizz, enhanced shine, and more manageable hair — without permanently altering the hair’s structure. Most keratin treatments last 3-6 months depending on your hair type and how often you wash.
What Is a Relaxer?
A relaxer is a permanent chemical service that breaks down the disulfide bonds in the hair to permanently straighten it. Unlike a keratin treatment, the results are irreversible — once relaxed, that section of hair will not revert to its natural texture. New growth will eventually appear at the roots with the natural texture, requiring regular touch-up services.
Key Differences at a Glance
Keratin treatments are temporary, add protein to the hair, reduce frizz without eliminating curl entirely, and are reversible — the results simply grow out. Relaxers are permanent, chemically alter the hair’s bonds, eliminate curl completely from treated hair, and require ongoing maintenance as new growth comes in. Keratin works on all hair types including color-treated hair. Relaxers are primarily designed for naturally curly or kinky-coily hair textures.
Which One Is Right for You?
If you love your natural curl pattern but struggle with frizz and want more manageability, a keratin treatment is your answer. If you want to permanently eliminate curl and commit to straight hair long-term, a relaxer may be the choice. However, I always encourage my clients to think carefully before choosing a permanent chemical service, especially if you have any color on your hair.
What I Recommend in My Salon
I perform both services, but I perform far more keratin treatments than relaxers. The ability to reverse a decision is valuable, and keratin treatments deliver dramatic results without permanent commitment. Many of my clients who thought they wanted a relaxer discovered that a keratin treatment gave them everything they were actually looking for.
The Non-Negotiable: Consultation First
Never let anyone perform a chemical service on your hair without a proper consultation. Your hair history, current condition, any color services, and your lifestyle all factor into which service is appropriate. Book a consultation and let’s make the right choice together.
