10 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Hair Extension Appointment
10 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Hair Extension Appointment
By Janelle Alexis | Certified Babe Hair Extensions Educator & Licensed Cosmetologist
Not every stylist who offers extensions is qualified to install them safely. As a certified Babe Hair Extensions Educator who has seen the aftermath of bad extension installs, I want to give you the tools to protect yourself. Before you hand anyone your credit card for an extension appointment, ask these 10 questions — and pay close attention to how they answer.
1. What extension methods do you specialize in?
A qualified extension stylist has a specialty. If they say “all of them equally,” probe deeper. The best stylists are masters of one or two methods. Know what method you’re considering and find someone who is genuinely excellent at it.
2. What brand of extensions do you use and why?
Brand matters enormously. The quality of the hair, the construction of the weft, the tape formulation — it all varies dramatically between brands. Any stylist worth booking can tell you exactly what they use and articulate why. I use Babe Hair Extensions exclusively because the quality is unmatched and the tape system is superior.
3. Can I see before-and-after photos of your extension work specifically?
General portfolio photos are not enough. You want to see extension installations specifically — installed, finished, and ideally after some weeks of wear. If they can’t produce this, that is a significant concern.
4. Do you offer a consultation before the installation?
A reputable extension stylist will not book you for an installation without a consultation first. Your hair needs to be assessed for texture, density, condition, and compatibility with the proposed method.
5. What is included in the price?
Is the hair included or is it additional? What does the maintenance appointment cost? What happens if your natural hair isn’t healthy enough for extensions when you arrive — will you still be charged? Understand the full financial picture before you commit.
6. What is your removal process?
A skilled stylist takes removal as seriously as installation. Ask about their removal process and what products they use. Harsh removal is one of the primary causes of extension-related hair damage.
7. Do you have a certification in extension installation?
Cosmetology school teaches very little about extensions. Seek a stylist with specific certification in the extension method you’re considering. I’m a certified Babe Hair Extensions Educator — I’ve invested in that credential deliberately.
8. What is your aftercare protocol?
If a stylist can’t give you a detailed, specific aftercare protocol — products to use, products to avoid, how to sleep, how to exercise, how to wash — keep looking. This information is non-negotiable for protecting your investment and your natural hair.
9. How many clients do you currently have in extensions?
Volume of experience matters. A stylist who has done extensions on hundreds of clients has seen more scenarios and developed better problem-solving instincts than one who does it occasionally.
10. What happens if I have a problem with my extensions?
Ask about their policy for addressing issues — slipping tapes, uneven placement, or discomfort. A professional stands behind their work. Know that policy before you book.
