What Speaking on Stage Taught Me About Courage, Visibility, and Owning Your Story

By Janelle Alexis | Speaking & Personal Growth

The first time I spoke at a real event — not a casual panel, not a podcast, but a stage with a microphone and an audience who came specifically to listen — I was terrified. I had notes. I had rehearsed. I had the outfit planned for three weeks. And when I walked to that podium, every single prepared thing evaporated, and I had to make a decision in real time: either hide behind the script or actually show up and tell the truth.

I chose the truth. It went longer than planned. It went places I didn’t prepare for. And it was, without question, the response that connected most deeply with the audience. That night changed how I understood visibility.

Visibility Is Vulnerable

I used to think being visible meant being polished. Having all the right answers. Presenting your most curated, finished self. And then I learned — through hard experience and through the women who told me, at the book signing table or in the DMs — that the most powerful thing about visibility is actually the imperfection. The moment where your voice cracks just slightly and you don’t edit it. The moment where you say the thing that cost you something and you trust that the room can hold it.

Polished is forgettable. Real is unforgettable.

What I Talk About When I Speak

My speaking topics live at the intersection of beauty, entrepreneurship, resilience, and identity. I talk about building a brand from a city that people underestimate — Houston doesn’t get the cultural credit it deserves. I talk about being a woman in business who leads with emotion rather than hiding it. I talk about what it means to write a memoir when your story isn’t finished yet. And I talk about how hair — yes, hair — can be a catalyst for how a woman sees herself.

I genuinely believe that industries we call “soft” — beauty, personal care, emotional wellness — are some of the most powerful industries in the world because they’re in the business of how people feel about themselves. That’s not a small thing. That’s everything.
