The Complete Bridal Hair Timeline: When to Book, What to Expect, and How to Prepare
By Janelle Alexis | Bridal Hair
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of doing bridal hair, it’s this: the brides who are most relaxed on their wedding day are the ones who planned early and communicated clearly. Today I’m giving you the full bridal hair timeline — from the moment you get engaged to the moment you walk down the aisle.
12+ Months Before: The Initial Search
Yes, really — 12 months out. The best bridal hair stylists (not to be presumptuous, but I’ll include myself) book up quickly, particularly for peak wedding season in Houston (spring and fall). Start your search early, make a shortlist, and reach out to inquire about availability before you fall in love with someone’s portfolio only to find out they’re already booked for your date.
9–12 Months Before: The Consultation and Booking
Once you’ve identified your top stylists, book a bridal consultation. This is not optional. A good consultation covers: your hair vision (bring photos — the more the better), your wedding aesthetic and venue, your hair type and current condition, whether you want extensions for your wedding day, and your bridal party needs. After the consultation, if it’s a good fit, you’ll typically secure your date with a deposit.
6 Months Before: Hair Care Commitment
Six months out, you should be in serious hair care mode. If you want extensions for your wedding day, now is the time to start your extension journey — you want your hair to be strong, healthy, and accustomed to extensions long before the big day. Also: start any hair growth supplements now if you haven’t already. Six months of consistent use makes a real difference.
3 Months Before: The Trial
Your bridal hair trial is one of the most important appointments of your engagement. This is where we test your vision, make adjustments, and confirm what products and techniques work best for your hair type. Bring your veil and any hair accessories. Take photos from every angle — front, sides, back. Wear a white or light top so the photos will accurately represent what you’ll look like. Come prepared with feedback and feel empowered to ask for changes.
Wedding Week: Final Prep
The week of your wedding, wash your hair 1–2 days before the big day (not the morning of — freshly washed hair can be slippery and harder to style). Do not try any new products. Get a good night’s sleep. Eat breakfast on the morning of your wedding before your hair appointment. And bring your veil, headpiece, and any accessories we’ll be incorporating.
I do bridal hair and airbrush makeup at Janelle Alexis Salon. If you’re planning a Houston wedding, I’d love to be part of your day. Visit the bridal services page or reach out to check availability.
