The Woman Behind @houstonhairbabe: Why I Almost Quit Instagram

By Janelle Alexis | Behind the Brand

There was a season where I posted for fourteen days straight and gained twelve followers. Meanwhile, an account that posted blurry selfies three times a week was growing by the thousands. I sat in my car after a long Saturday at the salon and genuinely asked myself: is this worth it?

I almost said no. I almost closed the app and walked away from it entirely. And then something shifted — not on Instagram, but in me.

The Original Why

I started @houstonhairbabe because I wanted Houston to know my name. I wanted women in this city to find me when they searched for the best extensions, the cleanest keratin, the most thorough bridal experience. The platform was a tool for a business goal. And that framing — platform as tool — was both what got me started and what almost got me to quit.

Because when you only see a platform as a tool for growth metrics, any slow season feels like failure. And the algorithm is unforgiving. It does not reward your intention, your craft, or your character. It rewards engagement, consistency, and trend-chasing — none of which particularly interested me.

The Shift

What changed was that I stopped posting for strangers and started posting for the woman who was where I used to be. She is building something from scratch in a city that does not hand you anything. She is talented and hardworking and exhausted and she wonders if anyone sees it. She needs to know someone made it out of the struggle season and is standing on the other side of it still intact.

I posted for her. I still post for her. And somewhere along the way, 25,000 people who are either her or love someone like her found me. Not because I cracked the algorithm — because I finally started telling the truth.

What I Would Tell Anyone Building a Platform

Know who you are talking to before you think about the numbers. The clearer you are about the specific woman you are showing up for, the more resonantly your content will land with her. And when it lands with her, she tells someone. That is how 25,000 happens — not in one viral moment, but in 25,000 individual moments of someone feeling genuinely seen.
