Behind the Chair: A Day in the Life at Janelle Alexis Salon

People see the after. The Instagram reveal, the glossy extensions, the before-and-after that gets saved and shared. What they don’t see is the day behind it. Here’s what my day actually looks like.

5:30 AM — The Morning Before the Chair

I’m up early. Not because I have to be, but because this is my time. The time before the phone notifications start, before the world starts pulling at me in every direction. I pray, I read, I think. This is where my best ideas come from — not the hustle, but the stillness.

7:30 AM — Salon Prep

The salon doesn’t open itself. Setting up the space, reviewing the day’s client schedule, checking in with my team. The quality of my client experience starts before they ever walk in the door.

9:00 AM — First Client

My first chair of the day is usually an extension client — tape-in moves, new installs, or consultation appointments. The morning hours are my sharpest. Complex technical work happens here.

Midday — Where the Real Conversations Happen

Here’s what nobody tells you about doing hair: the chair is a confessional. Over the years I have heard stories that broke my heart and stories that restored my faith in people. Women trust their stylists with things they haven’t told their best friends. I take that seriously.

Late Afternoon — Keratin Appointments

Keratin treatments are time-intensive — 2-4 hours depending on hair length. I prefer afternoons for these because they allow uninterrupted focus and time for proper processing and drying.

The Real Work

The technical skill is the visible part. But what I’m really doing all day is helping women feel more like themselves. That’s the work that matters. That’s what Rose Colored Glasses is about, in many ways — reclaiming who you are, even when the world tries to redefine you.
