How I Navigate Being a Public Figure in a Private City

By Janelle Alexis | Brand and Business

Houston is a city that values real over flashy. It is a city that has seen enough to know the difference between someone who is actually building something and someone who is performing the building. You can move here from another city with a big following and a loud presence and Houston will wait — patiently, unhurried — to see whether what you have is real.

Building a personal brand in Houston has taught me more about authenticity than any branding workshop ever could.

Houston Does Not Hand You Anything

I grew up understanding that in this city, you earn your reputation through your work, your word, and your consistency. The networking here is relational, not transactional. People pay attention to how you show up over time — not just the version of you that shows up at an event or on a curated Instagram feed.

That culture shaped how I built @houstonhairbabe. I did not build it to impress people — I built it to be useful and honest. To show the work, tell the story, and give women in this city something real to connect with. Houston responded to that because it is what they respond to.

The Private City Problem

Houston does not self-promote the way LA or New York do. There is incredible talent here — in beauty, in business, in art, in food — that the rest of the country simply does not know about because Houstonians are busy doing the work rather than telling the world about it. The challenge for anyone building a personal brand here is learning to be visible without losing the authenticity that makes Houston culture what it is.

I solve this by leading with substance. Every post, every article, every speaking engagement leads with something real and useful — not just a look or an aesthetic. The image is beautiful; the content is the thing.

What Houston-Based Brand Builders Should Know

Your local community is your foundation. Serve it first, deeply, before you try to expand nationally. The clients and connections you build in your own city are what create the word-of-mouth that carries your name further than any ad campaign. And when you eventually do expand — when media calls, when speaking opportunities come from other cities — you have a Houston story that is airtight because it was built on real relationships and real results.
