How to Choose the Right Hair Extension Method for Your Hair Type
One of the most common questions I get as a Babe Hair Extensions national educator is: “Which hair extension method is right for me?” The honest answer is: it depends. Here’s your complete guide.
Understanding Your Starting Point
Before we talk methods, we need to talk about your hair. The ideal extension method depends on your natural hair’s density, texture, condition, and your lifestyle. This is exactly what I assess during every consultation at Janelle Alexis Salon.
Tape-In Extensions: Best for Medium-Thick Hair
Tape-ins are my most popular method. They’re flat, comfortable, fast to apply (2-3 hours), and incredibly natural-looking. They work best on medium to thick hair. They last 6-8 weeks between moves and can be reapplied multiple times with new tape.
Sew-In / Weft Extensions: Best for Thick, Coarser Hair
Sew-in extensions are wefts of hair stitched to cornrows of your natural hair. They’re excellent for clients with thicker, coarser hair that can hold the weight. They’re also one of the most protective methods available.
Hand-Tied / Beaded Weft: Best for Fine to Medium Hair
Hand-tied extensions are applied using a row technique with tiny beads — no glue, no tape, no heat. They’re incredibly gentle and work beautifully for clients with fine hair who want a lightweight, natural result.
Micro-Link / I-Tip: Best for Low-Maintenance Clients
Micro-link extensions attach strand by strand using small metal beads. They’re heat-free, long-lasting, and allow great freedom of movement. They require professional maintenance every 6-8 weeks.
What I Never Recommend
Clip-ins are fine for occasional use, but daily clip-in wear puts stress on your hairline and root area. If you want a lifestyle upgrade, invest in a professional method that works with your hair — not against it.
