The Instagram Playbook That Grew My Beauty Brand to 25K Followers
By Janelle Alexis | Beauty Business & Social Media
I’m not a social media expert. I’m a hairstylist and salon owner who figured out Instagram by paying attention to what worked and what didn’t over several years of consistent posting. @houstonhairbabe now has over 25,000 followers — not because of a viral moment, but because of a disciplined, authentic approach that I’m about to share with you completely.
Rule 1: Your Content Has to Serve Someone
Before you post anything, ask yourself: Who does this serve? Your content can serve potential clients by showcasing your work. It can serve your community by educating or inspiring. It can serve your brand story by showing your personality and values. What it cannot do is just exist — just be a photo you liked — and expect it to grow your business. Be intentional with every single post.
Rule 2: The Caption Matters More Than the Photo
I said what I said. A stunning photo with a one-word caption will always underperform a good photo with a compelling caption. Instagram is not a photo gallery app anymore — it’s a storytelling platform. Tell me the story behind the photo. Tell me what the client said when she saw her hair. Tell me the technique you used and why. Give me something to take away from following you.
Rule 3: Show Up as a Human, Not a Brand
The content that consistently performs best for me is not perfectly lit extension reveals — it’s the real moments. The behind-the-scenes stories. The vulnerable captions about hard days. The opinions on industry topics. People follow people. Build a brand with a soul, not just an aesthetic.
Rule 4: Consistency Beats Virality Every Time
I have never had a video go viral. I have also consistently grown my audience every single month for years by showing up 4–5 times per week with content that serves my community. Consistency builds trust. Trust builds clients. Clients build a business.
Rule 5: Your Niche Is Your Superpower
I am not trying to speak to everyone on Instagram. I am speaking to women who care about beautiful hair, building something of their own, and living with intention. My niche is specific. My audience is loyal because I’m not trying to be everything — I’m committed to being something specific for someone specific.
