5 Signs Your Hair Extensions Were Installed Incorrectly

Not all extension experiences are created equal. If you’ve had a bad extension experience — or if you’re not sure whether what you’re experiencing is normal — here’s what to look for.

Sign 1: Pain or Tension at the Roots

Hair extensions should not hurt. Light pressure is normal for the first day or two, but persistent pain, tension headaches, or soreness at the attachment points indicates extensions that are too heavy, too close to the root, or applied too tightly. This can cause traction alopecia if left unaddressed.

Sign 2: Visible Bonds or Wefts

Properly installed extensions should be invisible. If you can see the bonds, wefts, or tape tabs at any angle when your hair is styled normally, the placement or sectioning was incorrect.

Sign 3: Rapid Slipping

Extensions that slip out within days or weeks of installation indicate a problem with the adhesive, the preparation, or the installation technique. Quality tape-in extensions using professional medical-grade adhesive should stay firmly for 6-8 weeks.

Sign 4: Tangling and Matting at the Bonds

Some tangling near bonds is normal and manageable with proper brushing. But severe matting that forms quickly at the attachment points usually indicates extensions that were installed incorrectly or that are past their move-up date.

Sign 5: Damage to Natural Hair at Attachment Points

When extensions are removed, some minor breakage is normal. But if you’re seeing significant thinning, bald spots, or noticeable damage at the areas where extensions were attached, that’s a sign of improper installation, weight distribution, or care.
