The Ultimate Guide to Hair Extensions: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Appointment

By Janelle Alexis | Hair Education

If you’ve been dreaming about longer, fuller hair but feel overwhelmed by all the options out there, you’re not alone. I’ve been doing hair extensions for over a decade, and the number one thing I hear from new clients is: “I didn’t know where to start.” Today, I’m giving you the full breakdown — no fluff, no sales pitch. Just the real truth about hair extensions so you can walk into any salon appointment completely prepared.

The Main Types of Hair Extensions

Not all extensions are created equal, and the right method depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and goals. Here’s what you need to know about the most popular methods:

Tape-In Extensions are the most popular method I offer at Janelle Alexis Salon. They use medical-grade adhesive tabs that sandwich your natural hair. They lay flat, look completely natural, and can be reused 2–3 times with proper care. They typically last 6–8 weeks before needing a move-up appointment. This is my go-to for most clients because of how seamlessly they blend.

Sew-In/Weft Extensions are sewn into braided sections of your natural hair. They’re a great protective style, especially for clients with thicker or coarser hair textures. The main advantage is that there’s no adhesive involved — making them ideal if you have sensitivity to tape products.

Fusion/Keratin Bond Extensions are individual strands bonded to your hair using keratin. They’re incredibly natural-looking and can last 3–5 months. The installation time is longer (typically 3–6 hours), and they require more investment — but clients who love them are absolute loyalists.

Clip-In Extensions are a great non-commitment option. You put them in yourself for events or days when you want extra volume, and take them out before bed. They don’t damage your hair when used correctly, making them perfect for beginners.

How to Know Which Method Is Right for You

When I consult with a new client, I’m looking at several factors before I make a recommendation. First, I assess your natural hair’s density and texture. Fine, fragile hair needs a lighter method — you don’t want extensions putting stress on hair that’s already delicate. Second, I think about your lifestyle. Do you wash your hair every day? Are you in the pool or ocean regularly? Are you super low-maintenance or do you love spending time on your hair? All of this matters.

Third, and most importantly, I look at your hair health. Extensions require a healthy foundation. If your hair is over-processed, breaking, or thinning significantly, we may need to do a treatment plan first before adding extensions. The goal is always to work with your hair, never against it.

The Hair Quality Question

This is where I get real with you: hair quality matters enormously. At my salon, I use Babe Hair Extensions — a brand I’ve been a certified educator for. The difference between high-quality Remy human hair and cheaper alternatives is immediately visible. Remy hair has the cuticles intact and aligned in the same direction, which means it stays smooth, tangle-free, and looks natural as it moves. Lower quality hair has misaligned cuticles that tangle, mat, and deteriorate quickly.

When shopping for extensions or choosing a salon, always ask: Is this Remy human hair? What brand? How is the hair sourced? Your extensions are an investment — don’t let price be the only factor.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first hair extension appointment will likely start with a consultation, even if you’ve already talked on the phone or via DM. We’ll look at your hair together, discuss your goals, choose the right color match (which is an art in itself — I always recommend ordering at least two shades to blend for a dimensional, natural look), and confirm the method and length.

Tape-in installations typically take 1.5–3 hours depending on how many rows we’re doing. Please come with clean, freshly washed hair that has NO product in it — especially no conditioner close to the roots, as this will prevent the tape from adhering properly.

The Aftercare Commitment

Extensions require care. Here’s the quick version: use sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo and conditioner. Brush from the ends up, never from the root down. Sleep in a loose braid or use a silk pillowcase. Don’t use heavy oils near the bonds/tape. Get your move-up appointments on schedule — skipping them puts stress on your natural hair and can cause matting.

I always send my clients home with a full aftercare card and product recommendations. If you’re a DIY person, I’ve also written several posts on this blog covering specific aftercare routines for each extension method.
