What to Expect at Your First Keratin Treatment Appointment
If you’ve never had a keratin treatment before, I totally understand the questions and the nerves. Let me walk you through exactly what happens at your first appointment at Janelle Alexis Salon.
Step 1: The Consultation (Before Your Appointment)
Every keratin client starts with a consultation — either in-person or via phone. I need to understand your hair history, your current condition, any previous chemical services, and your goals. This determines which formula is right for you and sets realistic expectations.
Step 2: The Shampoo
Your appointment begins with a clarifying shampoo to remove any product buildup and open the hair cuticle. This ensures the keratin penetrates evenly throughout your hair.
Step 3: Application
The keratin formula is applied section by section from root to ends. The application process typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on your hair length and density. You’ll sit under a dryer briefly while the formula processes.
Step 4: The Blowout
After processing time, your hair is blown out smooth. This is when you start to see the transformation happening — the frizz disappears, the shine intensifies, and the smoothness becomes visible.
Step 5: The Flat Iron
A professional flat iron at high heat is used to seal the keratin into the hair shaft. This is what locks in the results and creates the long-lasting smoothness. The flat iron also creates an incredible shine.
Step 6: Aftercare Instructions
Before you leave, I’ll walk you through exactly how to care for your keratin-treated hair. The first 72 hours are critical — no washing, no ponytails, no clips. After that, use only sulfate-free products to extend your results (3-6 months).
Total Appointment Time
Plan for 2-4 hours depending on your hair length and density. Come in with clean, dry hair and no styling products. Wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting product on.
